Online Tool from Jackson Lewis Helps Employers Track COVID-19 Employment Legal Filings at a Glance
COVID-19 Employment LitWatch Spotlights Trends by State, Industry and New COVID-19 Cases
NEW YORK, NY (November 19, 2020) Tracking state-by-state legal filings and spotting trends in COVID-19-related worker/employer litigation can now be done at a glance with COVID-19 Employment LitWatch, an improved online data visualization tool from Jackson Lewis P.C., one of the country’s preeminent workplace law firms.
“As employers grapple with the fallout from the pandemic, the threat of COVID-19 litigation looms larger,” said Firm Chair Kevin G. Developed and maintained by Jackson Lewis, COVID-19 Employment LitWatch is an interactive dashboard that spotlights the number and types of pandemic-related employment law violations filed by industry and by state. “The online tool tracks both federal and state filings, visualizes the relationship between new COVID-19 cases and filings, and allows you to sort the cases by plaintiff type to distinguish between single plaintiff verses class action filings. It also provides insights that may not be immediately obvious. Corporate legal teams might expect and plan for filings in, say, New Jersey, which in a recent LitWatch snapshot ranked first in cases per million population,” said Jackson Lewis’ Chief Innovation Officer Patrick DiDomenico. “But they might not expect to see Kentucky in the top five or Iowa in the top 10 states for COVID-19 employment complaints per capita with at least 10 complaints. LitWatch will help employers both plan and react.”
Among insights easily spotted within LitWatch: nearly 75 percent of all labor and employment COVID-19 related complaints alleged wrongful termination, and only 6 percent of cases were filed as class or collective actions according to data through October. More than 25 percent of all complaints were filed against healthcare employers, while less than 10 percent of claims were against manufacturers and less than 5 percent in education.
