Jackson Lewis Emphasizes Commitment to Providing Value, Moves Away from Billable Hour for Associates

WHITE PLAINS, NY (November 18, 2014) -- Jackson Lewis P.C., one of the largest workplace law firms in the world representing management, is pleased to announce the launch of one of its key initiatives for 2015—eliminating the billable hour as an evaluative tool for associates.  For over a decade, the firm has been a pioneer in the area of alternative fee arrangements.  This new approach to associate billing is strategically aligned with the firm’s mission to provide best in class legal services in the most efficient manner.

“For many years, I have been a strong proponent of alternative billing arrangements as a necessary step to deliver the highest caliber of legal work at the greatest value,” said Firm Chairman Vincent A. Cino.  “As a firm, we believe eliminating the billable hour requirement for associates is imperative in aligning the way we deliver legal services with clients’ needs.  Our firm was founded on the principle of preventive practices to reduce workplace disputes.  To this day, we are committed to partnering with clients to maximize results and minimize costs.”

As part of the firm’s 2015 associate billing initiative, Jackson Lewis will no longer utilize associate billable hour reports in evaluating associates or in awarding bonuses.  Instead, the firm will evaluate associates based on factors such as excellence, efficiency, responsiveness and pro bono commitment.  While clients will continue to receive hourly invoices for associate legal work, the rationale behind the firm’s move away from the billable hour is to further incentivize associates to achieve positive results in the most efficient manner.

“Rather than rewarding associates for logging longer hours, our initiative will continue to encourage associates to achieve the best results for clients without spending needless time worrying about how many hours they have billed,” Mr. Cino added.  “We believe this is much more desirable for our clients and attorneys alike.”
