Ryan Nelson Named One of the LGBT Bar Association's 40 Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40

MELVILLE, NY (July 29, 2013) Jackson Lewis LLP, one of the country’s largest and fastest-growing workplace law firms, is pleased to announce that Long Island associate Ryan Nelson has been named one of the National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Bar Association’s 40 Best LGBT Lawyers Under 40.  This award recognizes legal professionals under the age of 40 who have distinguished themselves in their field and demonstrated a profound commitment to LGBT equality.  Mr. Nelson and his fellow recipients will be honored at the 25th Anniversary Lavender Law Conference & Career Fair in San Francisco, California.

“I cannot think of someone more deserving of this honor,” said Michelle Phillips, co-chair of the Firm’s LGBT Resource Group and a Partner in the firm’s White Plains, New York office.  “From day one, Ryan has been actively involved in the firm’s diversity initiatives, including presenting at the National Out & Equal Conference and participating in the Lavender Law Conference.  He has also played a key role in analyzing the EEOC’s landmark Macy decision and the Supreme Court’s recent Windsor and Perry same-sex marriage decisions.”

Mr. Nelson is a member of the firm's Affirmative Action Practice Group, in which he advises federal contractor clients in the preparation of affirmative action plans and defends against allegations of discrimination in connection with audits by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs and related litigation. 

In addition to participation in Jackson Lewis’ LGBT Resource Group, Mr. Nelson is an active member of the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce-New York (NGLCCNY) and the NGLCCNY Legal Industry Council, the ABA Young Lawyers Division’s liaison to the ABA’s Commission on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, and part of the National LGBT Bar Association’s affiliate group for LGBT Lawyers in the Greater New York area. 

According to its mission statement, the National LGBT Bar Association “is a national association of lawyers, judges and other legal professionals, law students, activists and affiliated lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender legal organizations.  The LGBT Bar promotes justice in and through the legal profession for the LGBT community in all its diversity.”
