Jackson Lewis Partner Honored by Howard University

WASHINGTON, D.C., (February 28, 2011) – Jackson Lewis LLP, one of the country’s largest and fastest-growing workplace law firms, is pleased to announce that Washington, D.C. Region Partner Weldon H. Latham will be honored with a 2011 Alumni Award for Distinguished Postgraduate Achievement in the Field of Law by the Board of Trustees of Howard University.   Mr. Latham, who is Chair of the Jackson Lewis Corporate Diversity Counseling Group, is one of six honorees who will be recognized at Howard University’s Annual Charter Day Convocation on March 11 and receive the prestigious award on Saturday, March 12 at the University’s 87th Gala Dinner. 

This special award honors alumni who have achieved distinction in their respective fields.  Charter Day is a time of celebration for Howard because it marks the adoption of the Charter that founded the University in 1867. 

“Weldon is an extremely accomplished attorney who is exceptionally deserving of this recognition by Howard University,” says Firm-wide Managing Partner Patrick L. Vaccaro. “His expertise in his field combined with his devotion to public service and the community in which he works make him a true ambassador of our firm.  We are thrilled to see him recognized for his many accomplishments.”

“This award means a great deal to me,” says Latham, who is a 1968 graduate of Howard and a former Guest Professor at the University.  “It is an honor to be recognized by the University where I expanded the principles I live by today.  My years at Howard reinforced in me the need to give back to institutions that helped me achieve success, and I am proud to stand among the other honorees as an alumnus of this great school.”

The other 2011 Distinguished Postgraduate Achievement honorees are: actress Taraji P. Henson (Entertainment); Citi Holdings Chief Operating Officer Mark A.L. Mason (Business); Fairview Capital Partners, Inc. co-founder JoAnn H. Price (Business); former President and Chief Executive Officer of Noblis Dr. Lydia W. Thomas (Science and Engineering) and clinical investigator and health policy scholar Dr. A. Eugene Washington (Medical Education.)

Previous recent Howard University honorees include Honorable Gregory Meeks, Member of Congress (Law & Public Policy), News Anchor Fredricka F. Whitfield (Journalism), Attorney General of California Kamala Harris (Law and Public Service), Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs (Entertainment), Isiah Leggett, County Executive, Montgomery County, MD (Education and Government) and Dr. Charles J. McDonald (Medicine and Community Service.)

Mr. Latham represents several Fortune 500 companies, major government agencies, and other complex organizations in a variety of legal matters, including corporate diversity counseling, employment law, and government relations. He has advised clients for over 35 years in crisis management, diversity representation, complex civil rights and employment assessments, as well as high profile disputes and investigations involving allegations of race, gender, age discrimination and harassment.

Mr. Latham has over 20 years of senior partner level direction of major crisis management, civil rights reviews, and employment discrimination litigation. Among his numerous professional and public service activities, Mr. Latham serves as Counsel to both the PepsiCo Global Diversity and Inclusion Governance Council and the Omnicom Group Diversity Advisory Committee; a member of the National  Employment Law Council, and the Economic Club of Washington.  He was previously National Co-Chair, Hillary Clinton Presidential Campaign, Chair, Deloitte External Diversity Advisory Board, and Chair of the Legal Committee, Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority.  He is listed in Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who Among African Americans and Who’s Who In America.

Mr. Latham is an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Georgetown University Law Center, and a former Guest Professor at both Howard University and the University of Virginia Schools of Law.  He also served on the Board of Trustees (Visitors) of Virginia Commonwealth University, George Mason University and the American University.  Mr. Latham holds a B.A. in Business Administration from Howard University, a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, and an Executive Management Certificate and has lectured at the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
