What is unconscious bias and why does it matter? Research shows that despite our best intentions we all have unintentional biases. Many influences, past and present, shape these subtle attitudes and thoughts, some of which contradict our conscious beliefs about equality and fairness. Unconscious biases affect our decision-making and can have a profound impact in the workplace on personnel decisions, retention, morale, productivity and equal opportunity.
In the wake of unprecedented events such as COVID-19, the Black Lives Matter movement, and “cancel culture,” well-meaning employers implement programs designed to combat the impact of systemic discrimination trends, but may still find internal gaps where they would like to improve upon equity within their own organization.
In this session, Jackson Lewis P.C. attorney Janea Hawkins will discuss legal strategies to combat systemic racism and ways to stand up and attack stereotypes and assumptions that inform our unconscious biases.
