Jackson Lewis Shareholder Susan Corcoran Honored with NYSBA Pro Bono Award

WHITE PLAINS, NY (February 19, 2015) Jackson Lewis P.C., one of the country’s largest and fastest-growing workplace law firms, is pleased to announce White Plains Shareholder Susan M. Corcoran has been honored as a Distinguished 2014 Empire State Counsel® by the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) for her extraordinary pro bono efforts in 2014.

The awards program recognizes NYSBA members for their generous pro bono contributions, which, according to the NYSBA, “have allowed scores of low-income, vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals and families to have meaningful access to the civil justice system.”

Ms. Corcoran, who was honored at the NYSBA’s annual conference in January, was nominated by the Pro Bono Partnership, an organization that provides pro bono services to nonprofit organizations throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut that serve the disadvantaged or provide important services in those communities.

In its nomination letter, the Partnership wrote, “Susan’s stellar contributions in 2014 are numerous….Susan accepted five pro bono projects on a range of employment questions. As always, the nonprofits who contacted us with these issues were quite anxious and apprehensive. And as always, Susan handled these matters quickly, thoroughly and professionally.”

Ms. Corcoran was one of the Partnership’s first pro bono volunteers in 1997 and has remained active since that time. During her tenure as volunteer she has worked on 44 separate legal matters for Partnership clients, spoken at workshops on various employment law issues and served as a resource to the Partnership’s in-house staff on labor and employment issues.

“I have always believed that, in a profession dedicated to achieving justice, it is our duty to provide equal access to legal representation,” said Corcoran. “I am so proud of the work I have done with the Pro Bono Partnership and extremely grateful and humbled to be recognized for my efforts.”

Ms. Corcoran, who has been with Jackson Lewis since 1990, is an employment counselor and litigator on many national workplace law issues. She regularly serves as a valuable resource on fair credit reporting act issues as well as “ban the box” strategies. In addition, she is a co-chair of the firm’s Women’s Interest Network (WIN), which coordinates a number of initiatives for business development by and for women.

Ms. Corcoran is currently on the National Advisory Board for Lorman Education Services’ Human Resources Certification Program, and has recently served two terms as NYS SHRM Legislative Director, successfully participating in lobbying efforts to overturn New York’s annual WTPA notice requirement.
