Jackson Lewis Attorney Participates In EFCA Debate At Hofstra University School Of Law

Jackson Lewis LLP, one of the nation’s largest and fastest-growing employment law firms, announced that Senior Partner Martin F. Payson from the firm’s White Plains, NY office will participate in a public debate covering all sides of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) hosted by Hofstra University’s School of Law on Wednesday, April 1, 2009.

The event, “The Employee Free Choice Act: The Right or Wrong Choice for America?” will be moderated by Eric J. Schmertz, former Dean of Hofstra University’s School of Law and a renowned arbitrator.  Mr. Payson will be joined by Randel K. Johnson, the Vice President of Labor, Immigration, and Employee Benefits for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.  They will debate Stewart Acuff, Organizing Director of the AFL-CIO, and Amy Young, District Council for the Communication Workers of America, in an open dialogue regarding the proposed legislation.

EFCA, which was re-introduced to the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives this month and which is considered “Priority One” legislation for organized labor, would replace the current secret ballot system with one of “card checks.”  The proposed legislation has been a controversial topic since its initial introduction.  If enacted, EFCA will represent the single greatest change to American labor law since the enactment of the National Labor Relations Act in 1935.

The debate, sponsored by the Hofstra Labor and Employment Law Journal, will take place from 6-8 p.m. in Room 308 of the law school.  It is open to the public but advance reservations are requested.  To register online please visit http://law.hofstra.edu/EFCA or contact Mimi Alinikoff at Malini1@pride.hofstra.edu.

Jackson Lewis EFCA experts will be available to the press to discuss EFCA ramifications; please use the below contact information to obtain a media pass to the event.
